the apathetic chosen one

backstorytau was born as the third child, and third son of ruzu nhintau. after having tau, ruzu became frustrated at not being able to have a girl, and became distant from her children. in the events of the calamity, tau's father died and he lost his left eye. his control of aether was disrupted, and while he could still use aetherytes his grip on magic was too tenuous to pick up casting. after their father died, his siblings left home and his mother became increasingly unstable. tau bore the burden of her grief and his own for five years before he struck out on his own, determined to reunite with his siblings. after taking on some odd jobs in gridania, the scions of the seventh dawn took an interest in him. he joined them, believing that making himself into a hero would spread his name across the realm, and his siblings would find him.personalitytau comes off as melancholic and brooding, which is true to a certain extent. he's careful to hide his true feelings in difficult situations, although his trials through eorza and beyond have made his repressed emotions bubble over more than once. he is one to go along with the flow, preferring for other people to give him goals rather than make decisions himself. they have an unflagging determination to see their tasks through, even at danger to themselves. he doesnt particularly care about the consequences to the world at large, however. he tends to do good deeds only by convincing himself they serve his "selfish" quest. they tend to be flirty and make inappropriate jokes, although its more so a malformed coping method than actually expecting it to go anywhere. he has no sense of shame and a sort of twisted sense of vanity where he balances between looking like a total mess and also pulled together. has an oddball sense of humor and will say weird things in a deadpan voice to those he is close to.relationships: vesi fyth (retainer, best friend, light party member), vivi fyth (light party member, crush?), chambui iriq (light party member, friend), demogorgon (retainer), estinien wyrmblood (dragoon comrades), thancred waters (on again off again fwb/somewhat romantic relationship, firmly off post shb), haurchefant (first tragic love), zenos (It's Complicated.)

the level-headed sidekick

backstoryfrom birth, vesi possessed an intellect beyond her peers. she was sent to sharlynan at a young age to continue her studies, but quickly discovered the life of a researcher was stifling. she struck out on her own, hoping to put her knowledge to practical use. she dabbled in various magical classes and settled on the scholar/summoner duality. she took on a job as a retainer as a slightly safer career than being a full blown adventurer, and was eventually hired by tau to be his retainer. initially listening to his stories of slaying primals out of professional politeness, she soon found herself drawn genuinely to his tales of adventure. she joined tau in his dungeons and trials as a scholar, but around the beginning of stormblood switched to summoner as she no longer felt confident being the healer as the stakes got higher.personalityvesi is a bright, cheerful woman that does her best to make the most out of any situation. she is always willing to lend an ear to a friend, although she has the tendency to offer unsolicited advice, even for problems she hasn't experienced. years of working as a retainer have buffed out most of her personality quirks, and she struggles to separate her work and casual life. she is incredibly intelligent, although most of her knowledge is in raw theories, rather than applications of them. she is good at keeping calm in stressful situations, and will often be the one trying to make a reaction plan first. she is polite to most, but will snark in private with her close friends. she is uncomfortable with being in the spotlight and strongly prefers doing the less glamorous work that keeps everything else running smoothly.relationships: tau (best friend, light party member), vivi fyth (light party member, half-brother), chambui iriq (light party member, girlfriend from shb on), y'shtola rhul (dated briefly), krile mayer baldesion (friend), urianger augurelt (friend)

the naive hero-in-training

backstoryfrom childhood, vivi was entranced by stories of heroes, and would often pester the male viera for tales of adventure when they came back to his village. as a child, he was a little more rough-and-tumble than now, and trained as a gladiator. he participated in numerous tournaments, but didn't really feel like that was his true calling. he transitioned rather late in his teens, and struck out not to become a wood-warder but to follow in the path of the heroes of legend he grew up with. becoming a paladin in ul'dah, he travelled even further to coerthas where he made a living as a bodyguard for travelers and merchants in the area. through vesi, he became tau's penpal and wrote letters to him regularly. after the events of the infamous banquet, vivi met with tau in person, as the miqo'te was reaching out to whatever allies he still had.personalityon the outside, vivi has a regal and dignified air to him. he often wears full armor wherever he goes, even to more casual events. he believes that dressing like the heroes of old is key to becoming one himself. behind the distinguished exterior, vivi is air-headed and carefree. he is optimistic to a fault, and his many adventures through eorza haven't done anything to dent it. his main desire is to put good out into the world. his altruistic tendencies do put him in the line of fire often. he is slow to catch insults and dirty jokes, but over time his naivety is worn down some. he has a strong moral compass, and can get a bit preachy when encountering people who don't share his moral code. he tends not to think before acting, believing that a real hero can figure things out on the fly. he's not at all book-smart, and tends to pester people with questions whenever he doesn't understand something.relationships: tau (light party member, crush?), vesi fyth (half-sister, light party member), chambui iriq (light party member, friend), g'raha tia (friend)

the haughty mercenary

backstorychambui lived on the azim steppe from birth through her early 20's. born into the borlaaq tribe, she eventually moved to the iriq tribe following a period of reflection where she thought she was trans masculine. eventually, she decided that she was nonbinary, not a man, but kept the surname of the all-male tribe as a contrast to her feminine presentation. during her time in the iriq tribe, she dated sadu khatun and reveled in the violence of the dotharl. coming into adulthood, she felt embarrassed about her edgy childhood, and left the azim steppe. initially, she tried out summoner, but after realizing that healers were more in demand, she swapped to scholar. she traveled to kugane, working as a healer-for-hire for bands of adventurers. when tau reached kugane, he hired her to free up vesi to take on a summoner job. initially, chambui intended to simply leave at the end of her contract, but vesi and vivi convinced her to stay in the group for the long run.personalitychambui has been described as an ice queen by those she's worked with. she is blunt to an extent, and believes she's justified due to her years of experience being a healer for a variety of parties. she can be tolerant of ignorance if the person is willing to learn, but gets fed up very quickly with those who don't improve quickly. she also can't stand stubborn people, ironic enough considering her own hardheadedness. she is very guarded about her personal life, especially her past, believing for the most part that connecting emotionally isn't necessary to do a good job. she can be outright mean to people, but she doesn't really mean it most of the time. she tends to complain a lot in duties, but will grit her teeth and push through it.relationships: tau (light party member, friend), vivi fyth (light party member, friend), vesi fyth (light party member, girlfriend after shb), sadu khatun (ex-girlfriend)

the demon from another world

backstorydemo first met tau as a half formed voidsent living in the crystal tower. he was considered an oddity even among demons, as he had little interest in absorbing the aether of eorzans, and preferred simply to scamper around and cause (mild) havoc. they're kind of like a cat in that respect. demo followed around tau despite the miqo'te's protest, and ended up accompanying and observing him through tau's adventures. post-endwalker, demo had finally absorbed enough ambient aether to take on a more stable form. she chose to look like a male viera because they are cute. she also took on a job as a second retainer for tau, again despite tau's protests.personalitydemo would describe themselves as merely here for a laugh. they take nothing seriously, having a sort of blue and orange morality compared with tau and his party. they come off as weird and unsettling most of the time, but they do crack jokes frequently. they just usually aren't funny. he is prone to take the backseat in situations, wanting to simply observe the outcome rather than meddle in it himself. things that are interesting, regardless if they are good or bad, are more preferable to her than boring things.relationships: tau (retainer), g'raha tia (dating....?), aymeric de borel (dating..............?)
